One night a few years ago, I met a work friend over in nearby White River Junction, Vermont for a drink. We talked about a lot of things: friends in common, books, what it’s like to live in a sheep wagon—you know, the usual. We also talked about my friend’s new magazine, Junction, with its twice monthly events listings and lively, longer form writing about local arts, culture, and farm life. I had been a fan of the magazine from day one, in part because it had helped me get to know this small community at the cultural intersection of New England Yankee, Vermont hipster, and rural community.
Last year, Junction’s founder moved on to share his talents with a new community, and a group of writer/photographer/artists took over the care of the magazine. Starting today, I’m partnering with this crew to bring Survival by Book’s “Vermonting” series to the magazine, starting with a reprise of the story of magical thinking and my Covid garden.
